London: Port City
Museum of London Docklands, 2021
This exhibition opened the vast Port of London Authority archives to explore the history of the London Docks including the very warehouse holding the exhibition.
The exhibition concept used the simple device of boxes and crates to create a simple and inexpensive display methodology. Arranged as a series of thematic clusters investigated from all sides, the stacked crates provided an experience of exploration and discovery for the visitors - much like the curators experience as they combed the archive to create the exhibition and referenced the previous the historical working warehouse.
The boxes were constructed from simple plywood, a sustainable and reuseable material, which we returned to the fabricators for reuse in other projects. The stacks worked hard with all surfaces used to support, protect, display and have contextual graphics direct printed - nothing was wasted In the gallery centre a clearing used the backs of many display boxes for a projection mapped 180º show which explored the working Thames River over a 24 hour cycle. Additional “long lens’ boxes contained ambient videos evoking the environments: swinging cranes, water birds and underwater shots.
